Documentary by young Roma director distributed in schools
The documentary project ''Me, my gipsy family and Woody Allen' directed by Laura Halilovic (19), a young Romani woman, is a deeply personal insight into Roma culture through the portrait of a small community made from the perspective of someone that is part of it. A very intimate journey on the ending of nomadic life and about the difficulties of settling in a council apartment told in first person with irony and witt by the young female director struggling to accept her origins. According to the family's traditions she should be married already but is determined to continue fighting to achieve her dreams. Through the memories of her grandmother who still lives in a temporary camp, family photographs and home videos made by her father, we discover an unknown world that is seldom opened to strangers. A tale on challenging disciminatory attitudes, a potential inspiration for young generations. Since its first broadcast on Italian national television in July 2009, the documentary recieved five awards in Italy, France and Bosnia, amongst these the Cinema against Racism Award 2009 and The Golden Screen Award 2009 for best feature at the Festival Européen des 4 Ecran in Paris. As part of an awareness initiative in collaboration with the Decade of Roma Inclusion and the Dosta! Campaign of the Council of Europe, the documentary is currently distributed in educational circuits in Italy (Ce.Se.Di.), Sweden (UR Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company), Czech Republic and Romany (One World), France (Ligue de l'Ensegnement). Partnerships with public broadcasters, educational institutions and anti-discrimination bodies are welcomed.
