On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Office of the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Cyprus organised an awareness campaign entitled “The Protection of Human Rights 70 years later”.

During the 16-days campaign, the Commissioner held an inaugural event, on 5th of December 2018. After Cyprus Ombudsman’s, Mrs. Maria Stylianou Lottides, opening speech, Mr. Andreas Loverdos, a Member of the Hellenic Parliament and Associate Professor of Constitutional Law at Panteion University in Athens, and Mr. Nicos Charalambous, the first Cyprus Ombudsman, addressed the audience.

Afterwards, Mr. Andreas Dimitropoulos, a Law Professor at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, the UNHCR Representative in Cyprus, Mrs Katja Saha Savarimuthu and Mr. Achilleas Dimitriades, lawyer and President of the Human Rights Committee of the Cyprus Bar Association proceeded with their own interventions.

Mrs Stylianou – Lottides mentioned that the Universal Declaration “constitutes a common heritage, a common ideal of all the nations, which have the obligation to make every effort to develop respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, for all peoples and nations, but also for every individual person”. She also stressed that “respect for human rights should not only be a legal obligation, but it is also a matter of attitude of life and behaviour”.

After the inaugural conference, 6 other events were organised in all cities all around Cyprus, during which promotional material was given, a video was shown and a quiz was administrated. The video – prepared exclusively for the campaign – was broadcasted both in all media and on the social media. Watch the video with English subtitles here.
