Maltese equality body extends remit to cover employment, financial institutions and education

November 13th 2012
The promotion of equality on the basis of sexual orientation, age, religion or belief, racial or ethnic origin, and gender identity in employment, financial institutions and education is now an area covered by the Maltese National Commission for the Promotion of Equality – NCPE.
The remit of the NCPE was extended following amendments to Chapter 456 of the Equality for Men and Women Act approved in the Maltese Parliament.

Persons who are discriminated against on the grounds of sexual orientation, age, religion or belief, racial or ethnic origin, and gender identity in employment, financial institutions and education can now seek assistance from the NCPE and lodge a complaint with the Commission for further investigation. In addition, the NCPE is also responsible for safeguarding equal treatment on the grounds of gender and race or ethnic origin in the access to and supply of goods and services.

Before the approval of amendments to Chapter 456 of the Equality for Men and Women Act, the NCPE’s remit covered the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of gender and family responsibilities in employment, and discrimination on the grounds of gender and race/ethnic origin in the provision of goods and services and their supply.
