Transatlantic Minority Political Leadership Conference

A transatlantic conference on Minority Political Leadership was held at the European Parliament on 24 March 2011 in the context of the International UN year for People of African Descent

The International Year for People of African Descent, 2011 is already a quarter of the way through. The year which according to Navi Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, “offers a unique opportunity to redouble our efforts to fight against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance that affect  people of African descent everywhere”, has been the context for several awareness raising events and activities, with many more planned in the comming months.

One such event was the Transatlantic Minority Political Leadership Conference, which was held on 24 March at the European Parliament by the Group of Socialists and Democrats. The conference resulted in a dynamic discussion on issues such as racial equality and ethnic inclusion and the presence of minorities at the decision making table.

The conference also posthumously honoured Edouard Glissant (France) and Dorothy Height (USA) for the work they undertook in advancing minority political participation.
