Denmark steps closer towards equality on the dancefloor

The Danish Board for Equal Treatment helped move Denmark a step closer to equality on the dance floor when compensation was awarded in two cases in which men were subject to higher admission prices that females.

Although differentiation of admission price by gender is forbidden in Denmark, the practice still continues, as seen in the five cases recently brought in front of the board. Chairwoman Tuk Bagger commented that "The guidelines for the work of the Board for Equal Treatment are set by the EU, and the sanctions that the Board takes into service must be effective, proportionate and dissuasive. Our experience has shown us that a compensation equal to the difference in price (= a few hundred Danish kroner) only has a very limited effect ".

The Board’s final decision awarded compensation amounting to 350 EURO to the two claimants who had actually visited the clubs. According to Ms Bagger the Board considered the amount appropriate ”when taking into account the nature of the offense and the aim of ensuring that club owners will follow the rules in the future”.
