December 18, a Brussels-based non-profit organisation working for the promotion of migrant rights launched a petition campaign calling for the ratification of the Migrant Workers Convention by the 27 EU Member States. The International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, also known as the Migrant Workers Convention was adopted twenty years ago by the UN General Assembly. The Convention constitutes the broadest framework in international law for the protection of the rights of migrant workers and members of their families and provides guidance to States on how to respect the rights of migrants while developing and implementing labour migration policies. The Migrant Workers Convention is one of the nine core United Nations human rights instruments. It has now been ratified by 42 states and a further 16 have signed up and are in the process of ratification. However, to date, no EU Member State has signed or ratified the Convention.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Migrant Workers Convention, December 18 demands, via its online petition, the 27 EU Member States to ratify this international convention. Sign the petition: http://www.december18.net/ratify-migrants-workers-convention |
